Masdevallia coccinea 'Purple Passion' in bloom

Two Masdevallia coccinea mounted on a grapevine

Masdevallia coccinea 'Purple Passion' - Photo by Richard LindbergThis has been a rough winter for all of my Masdevallia plants. I reduced watering to help my Cattleyas and Dendrobiums get through the winter and didn't pay enough attention to the Pleuros.

The 'Purple Passion' got through ok along with the other seven Masdevallia plants which are mounted together on a piece of grape wood.

The mount is a grapevine trunk that I grew myself. It is four feet tall and at the top branches a foot in either direction in a "T" shape. It is also one of those great ideas that never quite lived up to expectation.

This is the third year having the Masdevallias growing on the mount. There are two coccinea growing next to each other, the 'Purple Passion' and an alba. I have had 5 of the 8 plants in bloom but never enough to make it seem worth the effort to transport it to a 'Show and Tell'.
