Laelia anceps 'White Wings'

Laelia anceps 'White Wings' - Flower photo by Richard LindbergLaelia anceps 'White Wings' is one of my favorites. Spike is only 15" and it is cold tollerant. Laelia anceps grows in Mexico and Honduras. It is warm to hot growing and needs a dry winter rest.

Laelia anceps 'White Wings' sprouting when it wants to, not beforeEarly last year I cut my Laelia anceps plants into tiny pieces, in many cases single pseudobulbs. The plants had been getting too big to handle and I had a lot of new greenhouse space. I packed them in sphagnum moss and moved them to Sonoma.

Lots of them sprouted and grew well last year. Some of them even bloomed. Those plants have being removed from the sphagnum and re-potted in bark for sale this year.

Some of the backbulbs simply sat in the greenhouse. This is one of them. Now I am seeing sprouts coming from these plants. This is a great example of the need for patience with backbulbs.

I am making this sprouted backbulb a free plant. What you see is what you will get. A 2 1/2-inch pot and a sprout peeking out. Mouse over for a close-up. If you will pay $5.50 postage and have not had a free plant from me before, leave a comment saying you want it then go to www.backbulb.com to get the email address and send me a message with FREE ORCHID as the subject. We will work out the details that way. 8pm PDT is the cutoff for this.

  2. I am very interested in this back bulb as I specialize in species orchids, especially Mexican and Central American. I have just gotten back into orchid growing after about a 15 year, lapse.

  3. Sarah, the plant will arrive mid-week. Water only when the sphagnum seems to be getting hard. If it has some springiness to the surface there is still enough water.

Anon, that is my specialty too. It is a big, diverse group. Sorry that this is gone.
