Encyclia spatella

Encyclia spatella - Flower photo by Richard LindbergEncyclia spatella - Plant photo by Richard LindbergMy collection went through a phase early on where I was trying to collect Encyclia. This is an early plant and it has done fine. I still like them but don't get as excited when they bloom.

Encyclia spatella grows in Mexico above 2000 feet in oak forests. It is warm to hot growing and blooms in summer. The genus Encyclia (Encycl) contains 240 species that grow throughout all of tropical America and the West Indies. They prefer intermediate conditions and a long, dry winter rest.
