The winter solstice is two weeks away. The days are about as short as they are going to get and the sun has stopped moving south. This picture is of my outdoor area where I have the Cymbidiums. It is about eight feet from the fence on the south and the sun is at such a low angle that it shines directly on the plants.
This is not a problem for the Cymbidiums, they like the light. But it shows how much the sun moves. In the summer no sun comes in from the south. I never paid attention to how far the sun moved until I started growing orchids. More orchids get a sunburn during the winter than in the summer. This is especially true for indoor growers where a lot of heat comes through the glass.
