Do You Like Pina Colada?

Maxillaria tenuifolia - Flower photo by Richard LindbergMaxillaria tenuifolia - Flower photo by Richard LindbergOne of the orchids with a very strong fragrance is Maxillaria tenuifolia. You it smells like coconut. It is easy to grow and hard to over-water. Everybody should have one. I have twelve.

Maxillaria tenuifolia grows in Mexico and northern Central America. It is cool to hot growing and very fragrant. The genus Maxillaria (Max) contains 650 some species spread throughout the tropical and sub-tropical Americas. They have a single flower. They are generally warm to hot growing.

The eight small ones are divisions of another plant I took apart two years ago. This species is easy to propagate. You take a four or five pseudobulb lead and stick it in bark. These are the ones I thought were too small last year. They have grown into nice plants, so they will go on the sale list for spring.

  1. Sadly, mine died last year. Still not sure what happened to it.

  2. Richard, other than randomly checking eBay, is there a way to know when you list plants? I'd love to purchase at least one of these. (Possibly another for a friend who desperately wants to grow orchids but is a chronic over-waterer!)

  3. At the top of the left column is a box with "Plants on EBay" as the title. I will change that when I am selling.

However, if the weather where you are makes it OK to get plants, I can sell you the two best ones in the 2-inch pots for $10 each. I don't list mostly because of shipping into cold weather.

  4. Thank you so much for the offer! I don't trust the weather here (northeast) and we don't have door-to-door delivery, so I'll have to wait and watch.
